catching up!

(warning: this is a looooooooooooong post... you might want to read it in installments)

well, i knew it would take a few days for everyone to study and critique the birthday card i drew, seeing as it is one of the major pieces of contemporary clip art created during this decade, so i held off on posting again until now.

but i'm back! so much has happened in this last week. let me tell you.

work began...

view from the courthouse...

and bugs galore! (i use the term "bug" loosely).

the first bug tale: as some of you may know, i am a major fan of both worms and ants.

when pierre a. made it his duty to throw worms at everyone after a rainstorm in elementary school, i was not amused. not because the thought of a worm landing in my hair grossed me out, but because it was such a thoughtless thing to do! worms are people too! okay... they're not people, but they have a very important job to do and i'm guessing they prefer not to be flung through the air.

and ants, well... i have a hunch that i was one in a past life. this is the only way i can explain my intense phobia of a particular brand and style of ant traps. i must have met a terrible fate in one of those things.

with all of this in mind, who do i root for when i see a situation like this:

worm vs. ant

ultimately, i decide not to interfere and i root for the ants. it takes a lot of strength to carry a worm around... and... the worm is dead so... i feel okay about the whole situation.

little do they know, but these weeds are going to be a huge obstacle for them...

getting closer, and still, no one is scoping out an easier route.
so, i know it's going to be a disappointment when i tell you that i don't know whether or not the ants got the worm over the weeds, but unfortunately, i left before i could find out. they seemed determined though so i'm assuming they figured something out.

bug #2:
dragonfly, like a little plane ready to take off...
unfortunately, he's just a shell of his former self.

bug #3...
i don't even know what this is, or what it's going to be...
any thoughts?

work, bugs, and...

planes...
that's it, just a plane.

work, bugs, planes...
and something else i like: miniature replicas...

so cute!
i just get a kick out of them!

and cats!

they're not always going to admit it, but they really do like each other...

and vegetables!
thursday was our first csa pick-up. (csa: community supported agriculture... basically, a box, or in this case, a bag, of locally grown vegetables each week).

and more about the radiation flowers. being the flower connoisseur that i'm not, i had no idea they were going to bloom... i mean, obviously, i know enough to know that flowers bloom, but i thought they already had. turns out, nope... here they are, in bloom:

this weekend was all about working on the garden. we created another row of plants, put flowers in the beatrices, and built a fence.

the new row: filled mostly with tomato plants... more specifically, volunteer tomato plants. we salvaged as many as we could find. most are fairly pitiful looking but we're hoping for big things from them...

friday: digging out the mud in the first two beatrices...

...and replacing them with soil.

beatrices with flowers (little flowers)...

friday evening... not many people at the garden... but we were there... and we found this:flowers, onion-ettes, garlic, potato seeds, peppers, tomatoes...

thanks CAC & oak hill correctional institution!

the garden plot as a whole:

the lettuce... which is already so much bigger than what's shown in this picture...

lunch break. on our bikes so choices were limited. how happy are we to be at a fast food restaurant???
that happy.

back to the garden...
some garden finds:

parsnip and siamese carrots...
the pride of the garden.

and a plastic spoon...
yick.

and of course, this weekend was our 1st anniversary! thanks to all who called and sent cards and emails!

how happy are we to have made it a year?

that happy.

not that we didn't think we'd make it!

sunday:

breakfast...

building the fence... the fence: merely for aesthetics. no gate to it...

installing the fence...

the final product...

enjoying the garden...

and, since it's still the anniversary... we justify celebrating (i.e. eating out) again...

monday's walk to work...
bridge.

monday morning at the capitol:

i know the cow tour thing is overplayed, but i'd like to point out that cows have more uses than simply producing food...

they can also be used for decorative purposes...

]
and, acting as a... magnet... attractor...?

lunch break at the capitol:

the big event... something the cows suprisingly played no role in:

lining up to be photographed... with a milk mustache...

what is up with elizabeth hurley's hair???

now this much is true!

after work: stopping by the lab.
greg and co. and liquid N2

finally, missed the bus again.
i'll take it as a sign. i'm in need of exercise.
